The Epic DC and Marvel Crossover We Almost Got in Peacemaker
Can you imagine a world where the lines between Marvel and DC blur, just for a moment? It sounds like something straight out of a fan’s dream, but it turns out this wild idea was seriously considered for the DC show Peacemaker. James Gunn, the man in charge of the new DC Universe, revealed he had a plan for a mind-blowing cameo that would have broken the internet: bringing in Deadpool.
A Fourth-Wall Breaking Dream Team
During the finale of Peacemaker, there was a scene where characters explored different dimensions through something called the Quantum Unfolding Chamber. This was the perfect opportunity for a bit of multiversal madness. What was Gunn’s big idea? To have one of those dimensional doors open to reveal none other than Marvel’s Merc with a Mouth, Deadpool.
This wasn’t just a fleeting thought, either. Gunn actually picked up the phone and talked to Deadpool himself, Ryan Reynolds, about the possibility. And in true Deadpool fashion, Reynolds was totally on board with the idea.
Think about it for a second. The chaotic energy of Peacemaker and Deadpool in the same room would have been legendary. Both characters love to break the fourth wall, make fun of superhero tropes, and are completely unpredictable. A crossover, even one lasting just a few seconds, would have been a historic moment in comic book movie history.
So, Why Didn’t It Happen?
If both the head of DC Studios and the star of Deadpool wanted to make it happen, what stopped them? The short answer is: corporate red tape.
At the end of the day, DC is owned by Warner Bros. Discovery, and Marvel is owned by Disney. These are two massive, competing entertainment giants. Getting them to agree to share their biggest characters is a logistical and legal nightmare. It’s kind of like trying to get Coca-Cola to feature a Pepsi can in one of its commercials—it’s just not that simple.
Even with the best intentions, the layers of approvals, contracts, and rights issues would have been a massive hurdle to overcome for such a brief gag. Gunn himself admitted they would have had to jump through some “pretty, pretty big hoops” to pull it off. So, while it was a fun idea, it was likely doomed from the start.
What’s Next for the Peacemaker Crew?
While we may have missed out on a Deadpool cameo, fans are still wondering about the future of John Cena’s anti-hero. James Gunn has confirmed that a third season of Peacemaker isn’t currently in the plans.
But don’t worry, that doesn’t mean we’ve seen the last of these characters. Gunn hinted that while their solo show might be over for now, there are still plans for them within the larger story of his new DCU. It seems likely that we’ll see Peacemaker, Vigilante, and the rest of the team pop up in other upcoming DC movies and shows.
It’s a shame the crossover never came to fruition, but just knowing it was a possibility is exciting enough. It shows that creators like Gunn are willing to think outside the box to give fans something special.
What do you think? Would a Deadpool cameo have been the greatest superhero moment ever, or was it better left as a fun “what if” story? Let us know your thoughts in the comments
