The Final Fast & Furious Movie Is Pumping the Brakes: Here’s Why

For fans of the Fast & Furious saga, the wait for the grand finale feels longer than a runway at the end of a movie. We all expected the sequel to Fast X to be racing into theaters soon, but it seems the project has hit a major speed bump. So, what’s the holdup on the final ride for Dom Toretto and his family?

It all comes down to one simple thing: money.

The Billion-Dollar Budget Problem

Let’s be real, the Fast & Furious movies have become famous for their over-the-top action and massive budgets. But it seems the last film might have pushed things a little too far for Universal Studios.

Fast X cost an eye-watering $340 million to produce. While it made over $700 million worldwide, that wasn’t the huge blockbuster return the studio was hoping for, making it one of the less profitable entries in recent years. It’s like spending a fortune on a custom-built car only to place third in the race. You still got a trophy, but it wasn’t the big one you wanted.

Because of this, the studio is being extra careful with the finale. The current script would reportedly cost around $250 million, and Universal has basically said, “No way.” They want the filmmakers to trim that number by a massive 20% before they’ll even give the movie the green light. Until that happens, there’s no official release date, no finished script, and many of the stars haven’t even signed on yet.

Vin Diesel’s Vision for the Finale

Of course, it wouldn’t be a Fast & Furious movie without Vin Diesel in the driver’s seat, both on and off-screen. He has his own ideas for how the saga should end, and he’s not shy about them. He recently shared three conditions he has for finishing the story:

  • Bring it all back home. He wants the finale to return to the franchise’s roots in Los Angeles.
  • Get back to the cars. Diesel wants a renewed focus on street racing and car culture.
  • Reunite Dom and Brian. This is the one that has everyone talking.

The Brian O’Conner Conundrum

That last point is a huge question mark. Bringing back Brian O’Conner, the character played by the late and beloved Paul Walker, is an emotional and tricky subject. How could they possibly do it? After the respectful send-off in Furious 7, many fans feel his story is complete. The idea of using digital effects to recreate him feels unsettling to many. It’s a creative challenge that could either be a beautiful tribute or a major misstep.

What About The Rock?

And then there’s the other big personality in the room: Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson. His feud with Vin Diesel is legendary at this point. While things have been tense for years, Diesel recently posted a photo of the two of them, seemingly extending an olive branch. Will they finally bury the hatchet and team up one last time for the finale? Fans can only hope.

For now, the final chapter of the Fast saga is stuck in the garage. It’s a showdown between the studio’s wallet and the creative team’s vision.

What do you think? Should they scale back the explosions to save money, or does the final ride deserve the biggest budget ever? Let us know your thoughts
