The Revenge of La Llorona: Everything We Know About the Sequel
Get ready horror fans, because the Weeping Woman is officially coming back. Six years after *The Curse of La Llorona* scared up a surprising amount of cash at the box office, a sequel is finally happening! The new film, titled The Revenge of La Llorona, has already started production.
While the first movie left critics cold, it was a huge financial success. Made for just $9 million, it pulled in over $123 million worldwide. With numbers like that, a sequel felt inevitable, but the long wait left many wondering if it would ever happen. Now, we finally have some answers. Let’s dive into what we know about the return of this terrifying legend.
A New Family, a Familiar Face
The sequel is bringing in some fresh talent to face the ghostly entity. Jay Hernandez (Magnum P.I.) and Monica Raymund (Chicago Fire) are set to star as the new leads. They’ll be joined by a cast of newcomers, including Edy Ganem and Martín Fajardo.
But don’t worry, there’s a returning hero to help guide them. Raymond Cruz is officially reprising his role as Rafael Olvera, the former priest turned folk healer (curandero) who battled the spirit in the first film.
According to the official story details, the film will focus on a fractured family that has to face its own issues while also dealing with a vengeful ghost. To save their children, they must team up with their estranged curandero grandfather—who we can safely assume is Rafael—to fight back against La Llorona.
A Fresh Creative Team Takes the Reins
While some familiar elements are returning, there’s a big shift happening behind the camera. Michael Chaves, who directed the first film before moving on to direct major entries in *The Conjuring* universe, will not be returning.
Instead, Santiago Menghini, known for the Netflix horror hit No One Gets Out Alive, will be directing. The script is being handled by Sean Tretta, who worked on the TV series 12 Monkeys. This new creative team could be exactly what the series needs to win over critics this time around and build a stronger story.
Let’s Settle It: Is This a Conjuring Movie?
This has been the biggest question since the first film came out. *The Curse of La Llorona* had a few winks and nods to *The Conjuring* universe, including a brief cameo of the Annabelle doll and an appearance by Father Perez from the first *Annabelle* film. So, what’s the deal?
The answer is a firm no.
Producers and the original director have been very clear about this. *Conjuring* universe producer Peter Safran has stated you “can’t count it” as part of the official timeline. The main reason? He wasn’t one of the key producers on the film.
Think of it like this: Safran and James Wan are the architects of *The Conjuring* universe. Making a movie without their core involvement means it can’t be part of the official family, even if it has some fun Easter eggs. So, while it feels like a cousin to the franchise, *The Revenge of La Llorona* will be a completely standalone story. This could be a good thing, allowing the legend of the Weeping Woman to grow on its own terms.
